Valhalla Rising (Nicholas Winding Refn, Denmark / UK 2009)
long-awaited, highly hypnotic Viking film between Herzog and Tarkovsky of BRONSON / PUSH-director, who both by his decidedly open artistic art house, and his undisguised brutality of the audience fully white Ford; elements that go together wonderfully well here in front of a vast landscape in which there is nothing as silent, harsh, unforgiving nature. Where it is clear always that even here "the void" where the person is faced with the last and first questions at the same time, the man himself that void with meaning, with some so religion has to fill, and that even here "the void" where there was a chance actually a "New Jerusalem" because of this violence that does to the human, can not bring about. Whether the film itself can all stick together like that, he throws out of questions, I can not judge - but is sure that there are such daring, radical films urgently needs to lead to demonstration of what film can do.
